My little Carter’s preschool does a Star of the week and this week is Carter’s turn! He is so excited as he gets to do things like bring show and tell in every day, do all the classroom jobs the whole week (hold the flag for the pledge, tell the weather and the day of the week), and bring in a special poster with pictures all about him. Well, being the crazy Pinteresty mom that I am of course I’ve been dwelling on this poster since I found out about it over a month ago!
Well last minute I came up with the idea of turning a poster board into a faux chalkboard. I wasn’t worried about making it into an actual chalkboard as I knew whatever I wrote would be permanent. I was really just looking for the effect of a chalkboard for his poster.
Everything I found was a tutorial for how to make poster board or foam board into an actual chalkboard using things like chalkboard paint or vinyl chalkboard stickers. I figured it couldn’t be too hard to get the look of a chalkboard. So off to Michaels I went to get 2 pieces of black poster board (2 pieces in case I messed up royally) and a chalk pen (I already had actual white chalk in my son’s play area).
Turns out my crazy thinking actually worked and I was able to achieve the look I was hoping for! Since it was Carter’s poster I had him help me with the whole project (deep breath Jennifer, this is your son’s project, it doesn’t have to be perfect!). He actually did an amazing job with helping!
First I had Carter use the side of a piece of white chalk and color the entire piece of black poster board. (Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of us doing this on the original black poster board…but you get the idea!)
Next we used paper towel and “erased” the chalk. This left behind the perfect worn chalkboard look!
Using a chalk pen we had fun doodling around each picture in the collage. Like I said, this is just a faux chalkboard poster board so whatever you write won’t be able to be erased.
We used double sided tape to attach his pictures. I also printed out a large letter C for the center of his poster. Cut out, trace around and color in…easy enough!
Needless to say I am beyond thrilled with how this poster about my dear little boy turned out!
