Last month I shared all about fueling the greatness of children with Oakhurst Dairy. Having taken part in this campaign has really helped me focus on and encourage the uniqueness of each of my boys. It has helped me slow down and observe what each child is naturally drawn to and to give them the guidance and means to pursue these gifts.
I could write an entire post on Hunter’s love of being in the kitchen. The other morning I decided I would let the boys take over the kitchen with me and help bake a coffee cake for breakfast. I knew a mess would be made and the process would probably take up a good chunk of our day. But who cared as we honestly had nowhere to go. So we poured glasses of Oakhurst milk and let the baking begin.
The boys took turns measuring and mixing ingredients. Milk was spilt, an egg almost rolled off the table, and flour got everywhere! But memories were made and the time spent fueled the creativeness of each child. Halfway through baking, my oldest asked if he could be done as he wanted to go draw. Of course little guy! While he does enjoy baking, it isn’t what drives him, and isn’t a passion. But Hunter, oh he would spend every waking moment in the kitchen if I let him! When big brother left to go draw, Hunter hung his head and asked if this meant baking time was over. Not at all, after the point of the day was to fuel their greatness.
The coffee cake (which ended up taking almost all morning to make as Hunter had to pay careful attention to where each blackberry was sprinkled) was soon baked and set to cool on the counter. When it was time to eat, Hunter helped pour more glasses of Oakhurst Dairy milk and served it to his brother who was busy coloring his drawing creations.
Both of my boys are creative but in such different ways. Being a creative person myself it would be so easy to just redirect their unique gifts to my passions. And sure, Hunter has definitely taken up my passion for baking; but he is taking it even further at such a young age and that is something to be celebrated! And Carter with his love of expressing himself through drawings (something I am not good at) and wanting to learn every single science fact he can get his hands on…he also needs to be celebrated! Working with Oakhurst has given me that reminder to slow down, identify and nurture the distinct gifts found in my children as well as each and every child.
