You all should have heard the squeals from the back seat when we picked the boys up from school and told them we were off to an after school surprise. “Ice cream? Family movie night?”…and they were pretty close (we have our family favorite activities in this house). But instead we were off to pick up Friendly’s and head on home for a family game night.
Friendly’s has a brand new menu where they have brought back six of their fan favorites. Now my husband and I were thrilled to see amazing offerings such as their Vermonter Burger and Asian Chicken Entree Salad. But let’s be real, the boys were pretty much in it for the ice cream; although they did enjoy the chicken tenders in the Hot Honey SuperMelt. Oh and did I mention that each dinner on the Fan Favorites menu comes with a small sundae? It’s true and each meal with a sundae starts at only $11.99.
Since we were taking dinner home to have a family game night, I placed my order through the Friendly’s Restaurant website: https://friendlys.olo.com. Adding items to our order and customizing ice cream options was an absolute breeze. We were given a time our order would be ready and made our way to the restaurant. Once I arrived I was warmly greeted and handed our takeout order. The restaurant paid such attention to making sure everything was neatly packed for our drive home, even separating the ice cream from the warm entrees and ensuring we had plenty of utensils and napkins. I think they knew those ice cream sundaes weren’t going to make it home with two excited little boys in tow!
I had already set up games on our dining room table for the boys to start playing once we arrived home. It is so neat watching the relationship between the brothers now that they are each older. Hunter still doesn’t quite understand all the rules and strategy of the games. But it is so heartwarming to hear big brother tweak the rules a bit to make it fun for him. Carter knows he will get his competitive time with mom a little later…sorry buddy, not going to let you win!
I remember growing up getting to go to Friendly’s for special occasions. It was always such a treat and I still get warm fuzzies when I think about the happy ending of my clown sundae. Something my husband and I have tried to embrace is celebrating even the mundane with the boys. Little surprises here and there such as take out, ice cream for the drive home and family games set up on the dining table for when we arrive home have helped our family get through the craziness of life.
Oh and back to the Fan Favorites menu. If you were to try just one item, I’m pretty sure the Vermonter Burger was the winner. In my opinion you can’t really beat melting white Vermont cheddar on top of a juicy burger patty and crispy Ciabatta roll. And when paired with a scoop of black raspberry ice cream it is definitely a win win.
