Nothing is more disheartening when starting seeds then seeing those glorious little leaves pop out of the dirt one day and whither back the next.
Damping-off.
You know, where it looks like someone pinched the stem of your seedling. Ugh.
Well, I found a remedy that you most likely have right in your kitchen.
Cinnamon!
It makes sense as cinnamon has antifungal properties. And damping off is caused by a fungul disease. And so far it is working!
I have only tried this on my herbs (parsley, sage and thyme were the ones I was having issues with). I forgot to sprinkle the cinnamon on one pot of sage and soon had damping off on some of those plants. But all the other pots of seedlings are growing great! My dad (an amazing gardener with over 45 years experience) was worried about the cinnamon burning some of the tender seedlings. I haven’t had any issues with that and I would think of herbs as being pretty tender plants. He is going to try it on his celery seedlings this week. I’ll let you know the outcome!
I love World Market Cinnamon. Sadly I no longer live near a World Market (will have to get my husband to buy me some next time he is in the Midwest). I do like the Frontier Organic Cinnamon as a back up for when I am out of Wolrd Market Cinnamon.
Hope this quick tip helps with any issues you may be having with damping off!
With Love, Jennifer
