Tis the season! No, not that season ;-). Fresh fruit season! And being the daughter of a master gardener the harvest is always plentiful. So my dad and I are back with another garden to table recipe. This time with fresh and juicy plums.
With all my years of baking I had actually never heard of a Kuchen. What is a Kuchen? Well after making one I would say it’s a lighter version of a fruit coffee cake. And now I’m cracking up because I just Googled “what is a Kuchen” and the definition is “a cake, especially one eaten with coffee”. So there you have it!

Fresh Plum Kuchen
Juicy garden fresh plums are the star in this Fresh Plum Kuchen from a new favorite cookbook: Taste of Home Bake Shop Favorites
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup softened butter
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp lemon zest
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 cups sliced fresh plums
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 350 and grease a 10-inch springform pan.
-
In a bowl cream together butter and 3/4 cup white sugar. Add the eggs and lemon zest and beat until well combined. Add the flour and baking powder and milk and beat until all mixed up!
-
Pour into your greased springform pan and spread evenly. Arrange the sliced plums on top. Now at this point you can get all fancy with the plums, or just do what we did and toss them on!
-
In a small bowl combine the brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle on top of the plums.
-
Bake a 350 for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool on a wire rack before removing from the pan. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream either warm or at room temperature.
