We were all gathered at Grandma and Papa’s house. I was squished on the couch between my husband and my brother flipping through some vintage cookbooks I found on Grandma’s bookshelf. I was especially intrigued by a red hard covered book with the title “Ruth Wakefield’s Toll House Tried and True Recipes”. My Grandma noticed which book had caught my attention and started telling me how my Papa had proposed to her at the Toll House Inn (which has sadly since burned down).
“This is yours now, dear. Take it home and enjoy it.”
(Yay! Another cookbook for my collection!…my husband just rolled his eyes.)
The next day I found myself getting ready to try a brownie recipe. And boy, was I ever in for a surprise when I tried to decipher a recipe that was written well over 70 years ago. (More on that recipe another day.)
That is when I realized there are many recipes out there that have been passed down by family members that are either wonderful recipes just as they are or need a little refreshing for the modern day. This is where I hope to come in. I want to take those recipes that have been passed down from the family with love and make them here. If they need some tweaking, then I will include those notes. I’ll take on the trial and error, the decoding of vintage terms and oven temperatures, and in the end hopefully leave you with a recipe that tastes just the way Grandma’s did. Or at least a better understanding as to how to make those family recipes.
