I did it! I finally tackled our linen closet. We’ve lived in our current house for 5 years now and when we first moved in, I set up certain organizational systems for different areas of the house (like under all the sinks, every single kitchen drawer, the boys’ closets). And I’m happy to report that those areas have remained organized 5 years later. My family is pretty good at that…if mama sets up a system, then they usually stick with it.
Well unfortunately, an area of the house that didn’t get a system was the linen closet/medicine cabinet (our bathrooms don’t have actual medicine cabinets, so I’ve always used the top shelf to keep all that stuff out of reach.) And as you can guess, many years’ worth of stuff has accumulated in said closet.
FINALLY I decided to tackle it! And after a trip to our local home store I was able to get EVERYTHING needed to accomplish a well-organized linen closet. So, I’m sharing 5 tips on how you can obtain the linen closet of your dreams (or at least one where you can open the door without fear of things falling out on you.)
- Stick with a color pallet. Decide on one or two main colors and stick with those colors when choosing your baskets and bins. I chose shades of grey and white with the only exception being the natural woven basket on the floor to store pillows. Since it had a white pattern on it, I figured it would work well enough with my color pallet (and because I chose neutrals, I had a bit of wiggle room).
- Measure then shop. There is nothing more frustrating than bringing home what you think is the perfect basket only to find out it is too tall for your shelves. Write a note in your phone of the width/depth as well as height of each shelf (or send yourself a text as I’m known to do) and throw a small tape measurer in your purse.
- Buy more than you think! You can always return what you don’t use later. But I find it much easier to have more than enough bins to work with when you are in the heat of your organizing project. Our local home store had just gotten in a ton of baskets and bins (I’m guessing for college dorms) so I had quite the selection. I ended up using most of what I purchased but was glad I over purchased because some items didn’t quite work how I was hoping.
- Mix of high and low. While this could mean the actual height of the bins, in this case I mean prices. Most of the pieces I used were under $10. However, I chose a couple statement pieces to really give the linen closet a more decorative look. You can absolutely get away with all inexpensive pieces that will get the job done; but I find when something is pretty to look at then I’m more apt to stick with it.
- Keep medication on the top shelf out of the reach of little hands. Speaking of medication, no linen closet is complete without Boiron®homeopathic medicines.
Like I’ve mentioned before, our family has used homeopathic medicines for years; specifically, Boiron. A new family favorite, and staple in our medicine cabinet, are both Acidil®and Gasalia®. I refuse to keep any type of well-known heartburn drugs in my house…but our family has suffered with indigestion and bloating. Since finding Boiron Acidil I’ve been able to offer my family relief with a homeopathic and plant-based option and will continue to keep my medicine cabinet well stocked with Boironhomeopathic medicines.*
