Mud season has definitely been a major thing here in New England these past few months! With more rain than sunshine lately, there’s certainly been no shortage of mud. And since the boys know Oakhurst has been celebrating mud season with their appropriately renamed chocolate milk, there has been no shortage of Mud Season Milk in our house as well!
One thing that has loved all the April (and May) showers, has been the early spring produce. Carter and I recently visited one of our local farmers market and there were plenty of crisp radishes, early carrots and bright green heads of lettuce. The rain clouds managed to hold off for just long enough so we could enjoy all the market has to offer!
Of course one of our first stops at any farmers market is the local beekeeper. The boys love honey sticks and even though we raise our own bees we are always more than happy to support other beekeepers! I think we have yet to visit a farmers market that doesn’t have a table of gleaming liquid gold all lined up in their glass bottles.
After paying for some honey sticks, Carter and I visited the Alpaca. My goodness do they ever have a personality! Fiesty little (err big) things!
Ever since Carter was a little one, back when we would take him to market in his stroller, he has loved listening to the local act perform. Music speaks to his soul and I found him leaning his head on my shoulder and giving his mama kisses on the cheek. Heart. Melt.
And I love the individual bottles of Oakhurst Mud Season Milk because they are perfect to throw in my market bag for a little snack while mommy finishes her shopping. Since we didn’t have Hunter with us it meant I got to enjoy a chocolate milk too..I can’t tell you the last time I’ve had a cold bottle of chocolate milk (kind of made me feel like a kid again in the best possible way!)
I love visiting the farmers market all throughout the warmer months. It’s so fun to see how it changes almost every week. Since we were there one of the first weeks, the produce was not quite as abundant as it will be in just a few weeks. But there was definitely enough to choose from to complement one of our family’s favorite veggie dips.
Ok ok, so I did have to supplement a few things from the grocery store, and the radishes we had from that day were long devoured before we had a chance to add them to the plate. But getting children involved in choosing produce, whether picking from the garden or selecting from a local farmers market or farm stand, is a great way to get them to actually eat their veggies! And the veggie dip is so simple that Carter loves helping whip up a batch.
I serve this veggie dip and a plate of rainbow colored vegetables with glasses of cold Oakhurst Mud Season Chocolate milk as an after school snack. It’s a snack I can feel good about and my boys adore. Oakhurst Chocolate Milk is filled Calcium, vitamin D, phosphorus, protein and potassium so is the perfect addition to any snack (especially a plate full of veggies!)
You can find Oakhurst Mud Season milk throughout Northern New England. Look for it in the refrigerator section at your local grocery store and for more information be sure to visit www.oakhurstdairy.com.
