The very best snow storms here in New Hampshire are the ones the weathermen don’t predict a week in advanced. You know, the ones that suddenly pop up out of no where. Weather report shows just a basic, cloudy winter week then all of the sudden some huge system forms and you know you are going to get slammed! Well that is exactly what we had this past Tuesday…and it was amazing!
I spent Monday prepping for the storm…extra bottles of water, all my pregnancy cravings stocked in the pantry, laundry done. And of course a little baking Monday evening.
When I went to the store earlier in the day they were completely out of bread. It actually cracked me up as to how panicked people were because they had no bread. “It’s going to be a wicked big storm…the bread aisle has been out since 9AM”, said my cashier at checkout. I don’ usually buy bread from the grocery store so them being out didn’t bother me any. But it got me thinking…mmm, fresh baked bread for breakfast with my boys in the morning.
Well who has the time or energy when you have been getting ready for a storm and are almost 6 months pregnant to knead dough for bread. That is where one of my all time favorite yardsale finds comes into play…my bread machine!
It is so ridiculously easy when you have a bread machine. Here is a YouTube video just to show you exactly how quick it is:
- 1/2 cup water (a little warmer then room temperature)
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 3 T butter, softened and cut into pieces
- 1/4 cup honey
- 3 cups bread flour
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 1/4 tsp yeast (or 1 packet)
- Put the water, buttermilk & honey in the pan.
- Dump the flour and salt in the pan next.
- Make a well in the flour and pour your yeast into the well.
- Snap the pan into the bread machine, select your loaf type (I use the Basic Bread, Medium Crust setting) and press START!

I don’t have a bread machine. I wonder if I could just let the bread rise on the counter and then bake in the oven? Thank you for sharing on Merry Monday – pinned.

Your bread looks wonderful! No better way to be snowed in than with some freshly baked bread! 🙂
