I think we can all relate with how different of an end of a school year this has been. The boys have been missing their friends, my oldest his teacher and the classroom environment, as well as after school activities. He had just started an after school art program and was so excited to learn different art mediums! So you guys have no idea this squeals that were heard when the boys got to open their package from Quaker Kids Organic filled to the brim with some of their favorite granola bars and art supplies galore.
As a mom I’m always wearing so many hats. But recently I’ve had to pick up quite a few more. One thing I’ve quickly learned is how I can still make things special but on a simple level. Take for instance our most recent craft time. I set everything up on the back deck to let the boys enjoy the fresh air, used a picnic utensil organizer to have markers, crayons and colored pencils readily available, and had a simple goal for the boys so they would keep their focus. And of course, there were snacks.
I set out a cute little dish of Quaker Organic Kids soft baked bars and snack-sized bites so the boys would keep their creative juices fueled. I can feel good about the boys snacking on them as Quaker Organic Kids are certified organic, non-GMO Project Verified and provide 11-19 grams of whole grains. They also have no added colors or flavors and only 5-6 grams of sugar. Plus they are delicious!
With snacks in hand it was time to create! We first started by painting t-shirts with puff paint. Carter wants to take a picture of him wearing it to send to his teacher to give her a glimpse into what we’ve been up to while schooling at home. Both boys then drew or wrote cards to teachers thanking them for all they’ve done for them during this school year.
Tips for craft time success:
- Have all supplies organized and in little arms reach. I find my boys draw for much longer when the colored pencils, markers and crayons are separated. A utensil carrier is a quick way to display the supplies.
- Make sure you have extras. Oops! When the boys were painting their shirts a gust of wind came through and ruined one of the wet painted shirt. Tears were quickly subdued when mama pulled out another blank canvas and helped start over.
- Give your kids a goal and ideas to get started. There is such a difference in reactions from my boys when I say “Why don’t you go draw” vs. “How about you make a card for your teacher and a friend you miss. We will mail them when you are done. Maybe draw a picture of an area of your classroom you miss most!”
- Have snacks you can feel good about serving readily available. Nothing interrupts craft time like a growling tummy. Quaker Organic Kids comes in various flavor like strawberry and chocolate so there is something for everyone!
- Print out these We Love Our Teachers printable (bit.ly/quakerkidsorganicteachers) to color and send to your kid’s teachers.
